Jourdan convinced me to go to volunteer at the Oregon Food Bank's Learning Garden again this summer. He loves to volunteer his time working in their garden, planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting. (The only thing he does NOT want to do when we go are "chicken chores"! He's not an animal fan....especially not a fan of cleaning up their "droppings" and such.) We got to harvest red and white currents...
Jourdan was excited to find that he has finally put in enough hours to get his own name tag at the learning garden. (He wore it with pride today, even though he and I were the only people in the group wearing name tags.) We also harvested garlic and beets from the garden. After we harvested all the garlic, we had to ammend the soil (with chicken compost - which nearly killed Jourdan - just the thought of touching it), and prepare it for new crops. We planted broccoli and cabbage in that portion of the garden. We also got to plant lettuce and peas.
All combined, the volunteers harvested over 91 pounds of fresh produce for the hungry today. Job well done. Now, if I can only get some things done in my own garden. Next week, Julia has made a request to spend time at the garden. So it looks like I'm volunteering another 3 hour shift next week too.
