Saturday morning, Julia's Girl Scout troop got a behind the scenes tour at the zoo. Julia took Mom, Dad and Grandpa R. as her special guests. Jourdan was camping out on Government Island with is scout troop, so he missed the zoo adventure (he's made peace with that - seeing how he feels about most animals) We got to go behind all those signs that say things like "employees only" or "danger - wild animals". Visiting the zoo will never be the same again. Plus, it was the first 70 degree day this spring - no rain (shocking, I know)!
The first thing we got to do was feed the giraffes. This was so exciting for all the kids and adults alike.
Check out the 18 inch tongue on that giraffe as it reaches for a slice of sweet potato. Crazy!
Next, we got to go inside the giraffe enclosure and see them from another angle. Julia was impressed with how close these amazing animals came to the girls. These photos are not taken with a "zoom" lens. She thought it was funny how all the other visitors at the zoo were watching US as much as they were entertained by the animals.
Julia with her second favorite person, Grandpa R. .....Just as an FYI, I am not her #1 favorite person (she told me her top 6 people at the zoo); but seeing as how her top two people are so fantastic...I can live with that.
We got to go inside the elephant enclosure too. Volunteers were giving two of the elephants baths while we watched. Again, Julia noticed all the other zoo visitors looking down at her from behind the railing. (I think it gave her a strange sense of excitement about being "special" for the day.)
The whole troop and their families.
The elephant bath.
On our way out, we stopped to feed the lorikeets....one of Julia's favorite things. After we got home, we rested for an hour, and headed out to our next adventure that day.....{post to follow later}

What a really cool thing to be able to do. (And I'm not a zoo-lover, either. Once every 5 years is plenty for me.) That looks like it was really fun. I LOVE the giraffes!!! (P.S. I stole your church widget for my blog. Love it.)
Super Duper! How much fun for all of you. We need to go to the zoo sometime. I'm so glad you had such great weather for this experience too.
