We also went to visit the Smith family farm while we were in Palmyra, New York. The kids are standing in front of the log home where Joseph and his siblings grew up.
This is the kitchen of the log home. Julia likes to look for the widow savers in the fireplace now that she has learned about them.
This is the upstairs bedroom of the log home where Moroni appeared to Joseph and instructed him on where to find the gold plates. It was interesting to learn that he not only shared his room with his brothers, but most likely shared his bed.
This frame home was built by Alvin Smith (Joesph's oldest brother) as a home where he could live when he got married. However, he died before he was able to get married or live in the home. The Smith family did move into the home for a short while after its completion. The home is much larger than the log home. And, unlike the log home, this is an original building.
This is the kitchen in the frame house. I was listening to the tour guide explaining the Smith's lifestyle and how different it is from our lives today. I leaned over and asked Jonathan if I should be jealous that Emma's kitchen was larger than mine. (It's true!)
Once Joseph had the gold plates, he had to keep them hidden. Many people were continually raiding his home and attempting to steal the plates for their value in gold. One of the places that Joseph hid them was under the bricks in the fireplace where the kids are standing.
This is the coopers shop on the Smith family farm. Joseph also hid the plates in this shop. Once in a barrel, and one time, he even hid them in plain sight hanging within a tool box hanging on top of the beam overhead.
This is a picture of the Sacred Grove which is just across from the Smith home.
I made a video of the sounds in the grove. I thought that maybe someday I could use it for a primary lesson. Also, Grandpa can "see" what the Sacred Grove was like...to bring back memories.
