Refuge, Tunnels, and Bubba's

On Thursday, (in Kauai) we drove over to the east side of the island to see a National Wildlife Refuge. After having seen signs, warning us NOT to run them over on the roadways.....and never even getting the tiniest glimpse of one............we finally saw a nene (endangered Hawaiian goose)!

We went to a beach on that side of the island to snorkel (based on a recommendation from a friend). The beach is called Tunnels (there are "tunnels" in the reef that people can swim through. I say "people" because I forbade my kids from doing so.....I have nightmares about being stuck in such places underwater. I know, I'm a buzz-kill!) The kids tried to snorkel again. This time Jourdan had much more success. When Julia and Dad gave up (I couldn't give up because I never really got started)...he stayed out looking at the reef with strangers. He even snorkeled up to the edge of the reef and looked off into the abyss. Although others saw the reef shark, we missed it.....probably a good thing!

Again, no pictures of snorkeling because we used a disposable camera. I'll have to post them later. After snorkeling, we had worked up quite an appetite. We stopped at this burger place we had seen on the way out to the beach. At lunch time it was completely PACKED. The line was around the side of the tiny building. We came back for food at a slow time, and we were very happy with our burgers. If you're ever in Hanalei, give Bubba's a try.

We loved their slogan, which you can see on the above sign. Their stickers also included "attorneys". The best part about dinner, was reading all the stickers and signs on the wall.

Although you probably can't make out what they say....just believe us that they were funny, and there were MANY. The top one says "Bubba refuses to serve any burger costing less than a can of dog food." They also don't serve lettuce and tomato, but that's another story all by itself. Julia's favorite two were stickers/signs were:
* Your mouth is moving and all I hear is BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!
* So much to do, and so few people to do it FOR me.
