Exploring Kauai

We started our day on Monday with a trip to the beach here at our hotel in Lihue, Kauai. The kids buried themselves....correction....Dad buried the kids in the sand (you can see his hand tossing more sand on them in the photo below). It was all fun and games, UNTIL a big wave came up and covered them both. Jourdan thought it was funny, but Julia had sand and salt water up her nose and in her mouth...not funny at all for her! Jourdan had so much fun, he repeated the process. This is what it looks like when a wave hits! (I know, you've all witnessed this before....just pretend you haven't....humor us!)We got totally sunburned during this little activity. We mistakenly thought we weren't going to be out too long. I won't post a picture of that, you can imagine our red backs and shoulders all by yourselves! After hitting the pool and water slide, we drove to see Opaeka'a Falls in Kapa'a. The falls were nice, but it's not as fun to see them from behind a fence along a "scenic overlook". We prefer a closer look, but what can tourists do?
Then, we drove up an unpaved trail (just to see what was up there) with our jeep. We even drove across a river (good thing it was small today - no rain)! Then we let the kids out to swing from the vines in the forest. As you can see, my OLDEST CHILD had the most fun on the vines!
Then we continued driving around the island. We stopped to look out over the Hanalei Valley and the taro fields. We continued driving along the historic highway up the coast. Apparently, it was an ancient Hawaiian walking trail. Now it is covered with at least 10 one lane bridges....practicing our manners while crossing wasn't too bad (one car at a time). When we reached the furthest point (again up against the Napali Coast -other side this time) we saw a beach with these signs:The waves at this beach could have swallowed a school bus (without chewing)! They were beautiful to watch and listen to as they crashed across the reef.
This picture is a little blurry because it was raining. Again, the green hill behind us is the beginning of the Napali Coast from the east side.

WOOOOOW!!! I love all the pictures. Tell Julia I'm totally with her on the salt water in your nose & mouth. That happened to me ONCE when I was snorkeling & I'm sure I reacted the very same way Julia did. NOT cool. ;) It looks like you're having a great time!! I love it!
