Not only was Saturday "World Thinking Day" for the Girl Scouts, but it was also National History Day for Jourdan. He competed (as part of his EXCEL history class) in this regional event that celebrates Innovations in History. The idea was to choose an innovation, research this innovation, write an essay, and create a science-fair type display showing/telling how this innovation has changed history. Jourdan chose to do his project on the solar cell. He began working on this project in October-ish.....it was nice to finally have this come to an end. Here he is with his finished project.
I really wish I had taken a picture of Jourdan and Grandpa soldering the solar panel and LEDs to his display. They worked together on two separate occasions, but apparently, I was too "busy" to think about taking a picture.
The little LEDs light up when a flashlight shines on the solar cell. It's really cool. Anyway, after he and his dad waited all day up at the Washington State University (Vancouver) campus, Jourdan was sadly informed that his project did not make the cut to move onto the state-level competition. (He also felt relief that this was over, so it wasn't entirely sad!) He was proud of the hard work he had put into his project, and we were too. So, on Monday, Jourdan walked into the 2nd grade class I was teaching with a gigantic red ribbon around his neck.. I did a double-take because I thought he was wearing some sort of tie (or worse, and ugly necklace)...but he had been awarded a medal for "excellence" at the National History Day competition.
He also got a certificate, or as it is affectionately called at our house, a "PER-cificate"! (Yes, I know the pictures are sideways, but I've loaded them 8 times and re-taken them too. Blogger just likes them this way apparently! Yesterday, when it published, these photos were not even visable. )
He was proud of his hard work without the recognition, but the medal and certificate put the icing on the perverbial "cake"!

That is REALLY cool! Good for Jourdan! I know what you mean--sometimes not making it all the way to the "top" is just fine!! Too exhausting. Looks like an excellent project!
We are very proud of you, Jourdan. Grandpa says, "I always knew you were smarter than the average bear."
